Take your family and feel the experience of more than 1,500 butterflies from all over the world flying free around you in a tropical environment. The Butterfly Park Benalmádena is over 2,000 m2, the largest climate controlled space dedicated to butterflies, in Europe. To give the building authenticity many building materials and decorative elements were brought directly from Thailand. The blue tiles covering the pagoda entrance hall were made in that color expressly in Chiang Mai for the butterfly, and is the original tile that is traditionally used in the temples of Thailand.

More than 1,500 butterflies from tropical areas all over the world fly free inside the Butterfly Park Mariposario. As their lifespan is only 2-3 weeks you will be able to find new species each visit. The park exhibits more than 150 different species throughout the whole year.

Many of the butterfly species reproduce in the park itself, so besides butterflies you can observe all the stages of their fascinating biological cycle as eggs and caterpillars, and other behavior such as their courtship flights and mating. Every day new butterflies are born in the nursery, so do not miss the unique opportunity to see how they hatch from the chrysalis and spread their wings. You will be able to witness their first flight after the metamorphosis.

Although the live butterfly species in the same space around the world there is no conflict or competition between them.

The environmental conditions in the garden are the same as in their original habitats with 80% humidity and a temperature of between 24-29ºC.

The plants and gardens

In the Butterfly Park Mariposario, plants share centre stage with butterflies because they are essential for their life. Butterfly feeding and reproduction depend on the plants. Each butterfly species needs a specific plant to lay its eggs in, and this is what the caterpillar feeds on. This is called the “host plant”. This close relationship between butterflies and plants occurs as a result of millions of years of evolution. Female butterflies must find and recognize their host plants among the great botanical diversity of the tropical forests. The survival of their offspring depends upon this.
