Born and raised in communist Poland, the grey world of Milk Bars, Trabant cars and cabbage for breakfast, lunch and dinner was not for Beata. On an arranged (compulsory) ‘educational‘ tour to East Berlin she climbed the famous television tower symbol of East Berlin, to glimpse her first view of the bright lights of the West – to the east darkness - to the west the bejewelled, sparkling and beguiling bright lights of West Berlin. It was at that moment Beata decided she would make her break for freedom to escape communism to a new life in the West.

Three weeks later she made the break and ‘Jumped the wall’. How Beata crossed from communist East to West Berlin remains still today a secret, friends in the right places, late nights tunnelling, hidden in the back of a car, by glider – all have been rumoured. On arriving in West Berlin Beata embraced the freedoms the West had to offer to learn all there was to learn about gastronomy studying in amongst other places the restaurant on top of the Reichstag the building of the German parliament right beside The Wall that divided East from West. On the fall of the Berlin Wall Beata returned to Poland to open her first Vino-y-Mar restaurant and bar in the square of the old town of Poznan.
